Workshop on Sustainability in Business

2025-12-10 11:04
A workshop on sustainability in business was held on December 12, 2025, conducted by Mr. Ioannis Theocharis within the framework of the Re-Direction Project. The session brought together participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds to explore key sustainability concepts and share practical experiences. The discussion opened with participant introductions, technical coordination, and an overview of the workshop’s objectives, setting the stage for a focused and interactive exchange.

The core of the workshop featured a presentation on Donut Economics, which emphasized balancing human development with ecological limits. The framework highlighted the urgent need for businesses to transition from traditional linear models to circular and regenerative ones that account for social and environmental impacts. Particular attention was given to planetary boundaries, stakeholder capitalism, and the role of governance and ownership in shaping sustainable business practices.

Participants actively contributed to the discussion by sharing their experiences with sustainability, especially in challenging economic and social conditions. Special attention was paid to the difficulties of pursuing sustainable development in contexts affected by conflict. The conversation also highlighted gaps in awareness related to ecological impacts on business, particularly through examples from student initiatives in sustainable tourism.

The workshop concluded with a discussion on the practical barriers businesses face in adopting sustainable models, including high costs, regulatory pressures, and limited time and resources. The importance of institutional support, effective time management, and cooperative approaches was emphasized. Successful cooperative models from the Basque country were referenced as examples of how collective action can support sustainable economic transformation and long-term resilience.
